Ballard emerged on the Indy scene in 2019, bringing to life original songs shaped by a lifetime of experience. He stepped in the studio in November of '23 with the ambition to make an album of his music. What transpired is an EP of alt-country recordings documenting Ballard’s musical journey as an artist, which has been compared to the likes of Wilco, CCR, Tom Petty, and Chris Isaak. Enter the landscape of On the Run, the debut album from Ballard. From the rollicking, western, runaway ride of the title track, to the southwestern landscape of “City of Refuge,” and on through the country slide ballad, “Never Look Back.” Ride the wave into “Float On,” a jam that carries you drifting into the Texas Swing of “When You Ever Gonna Settle Down” to arrive at last on a lucky streak with the ballad, “Sometimes I Lose.”

Look for “City of Refuge,” the debut single from On The Run, streaming everywhere, along with the title track, “On The Run”!

“City of Refuge,” The Debut Single From The Album, On The Run!

“People sometimes ask me for the story behind a song, and although I’m hesitant to share the personal meaning of my songs, I don’t really mind sharing the backdrop for the songs. In the case of “City,” I wrote the song more as a poetic tale, so it begs literary interpretation. Some of my songs write themselves, meaning, I don’t really think too much about them. They just come to me, like lightening in a bottle. I don’t really know where they come from or how that works. I have ideas about it, but simply put, they come to me, and I just write them down . . . It’s as though the words and chords are being transmitted. “City of Refuge” was not that type of song. I actually worked on the song for years before I ever completed it.”

“When I was a kid I spent a lot of time fishing with my old man and floating down Fall Creek with my brother and our buddies. When my neighbors and I rented a house boat at Dale Hollow Lake, I found a lot of nostalgia in the experience of getting back on the water, so I wrote a song that encapsulated all my fond memories of being on the water.”
